Genres I Tend To Avoid

Hello friends! Today’s post is a discussion post on the genres that I tend to stray from. In no way am I saying these genres are “bad”, only that they’re just not for me as we are all entitled to our own opinions. So without further ado, let’s jump straight into the discussion.

Horror/Thriller: The main reason I avoid these genres is the fact that I scare easily and because my dreams are vivid, nightmares usually keep me up for the rest of the night. And a sleepy Stephanie is a grumpy one aha. I know thrillers aren’t scary, BUT they do creep me out enough to give me nightmares or to use me paranoia. I guess murder mysteries count as thrillers, but I can read some of these, as long as I’m reading them in broad daylight.

Romance: This genre encompasses the romance shelf in bookstores, I’m not too sure how broad this genre is. But I tend to avoid this genre because most tend to have sexual content, which I am uncomfortable with reading in general, and they are too lovey-dovey in my opinion. But sometimes I do give them I try (such as with Colleen Hoover’s Maybe Someday which I loved) and maybe I’ll grow to love them more in the future as I guess this reason is more of a personal preference one.

Science-Fiction: Okay, here me out first. I have read some sci-fi books and loved them. And though I adore space and love watching space-related videos, sometimes, sci-fi novels aren’t for me. So, unless I’ve been recommended a sci-fi book by someone I trust or I’m very intrigued in it, I won’t usually go for a sci-fi book.

Classic: I feel like an awful bibliophile for including this genre on the list. I’ve found in hard to understand and actually stay interested in classics, but that’s not to say that I’ll not read any books from this genre. I’m sure I’ll read more classics in the future, as there are some that I’m interested in reading.

Western: Yes, I am searching up a list of genres. Western books involve the time period, late 1800s to late 1900s in the American Old West Frontier. The only reason I won’t pick up a book from this genre is because the time period and setting do not appeal to me, and I know I wouldn’t enjoy the novel.

And that’s all I have for today. I’ve only included fiction genres in this list because I don’t read many non-fiction, and even when I do, I enjoy them, for the most part.

What are some genres that you don’t pick up as often, or dislike?

  1. I was hesitant about thriller for a while even though I don’t scare easily, but after reading a few I have found I really enjoy the genre. It’s really hard when you have vivid nightmares. I rarely have nightmares so I’m lucky in that regard.
