[STEPH RECS] | ASIAN BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ IN MAY (OR ANYTIME REALLY)

Hi friends, I’ve decided to start recommending books that I love to you all. I thought it’d be fun, because I love seeing other’s recommendations and thought you might be interested in mine.

As it is May, and therefore Asian Pacific Heritage Month, I decided my first recommendations will be books featuring Asian characters, or written by Asian authors. This topic is near and dear to my heart as growing up, I have never seen myself represented in a book, and I have still yet to see my cultural identity in a book, specifically in the genres I read. I know there are a couple out there, but I haven’t been able to relate to them.

Anyways, on to the recommendations. Today I will be sharing with you 5 books which I read and loved. I may do a part 2 to this if the list I have in mind exceeds 5 (it does but who knows if I’ll actually post part 2 in May ahaha).

Onto the recommendations:

These two books are heartbreaking, emotional and so beautifully written and am in love with them both. So I’m recommending them together because they’re by the same author and I didn’t want to leave one out ahaha. Trust me, Starfish and Summer Bird Blue will make you tear up, if not cry.

Asian superheroes? Yes please. This trilogy is so cute, fun and delightful, although a little predictable. But I love the relationships the characters have, and especially the diversity represented in this book. There are different ethnic and sexual orientations represented and I just love this series wholeheartedly. The last book comes out in June, so you should read it now in time for the release.

I don’t talk about this book much, but this book was fun and cute and had Chinese mythological aspects which just made me fall in love with it even more. I am not so patiently waiting for the sequel which comes out in 2020 (cries, 2020 is so far away right now) -> please go read this cute story.

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo Cover

I love this book, but it’s been a while since I last read it so I don’t know if my feelings for it has changed. However, when I read it, I adored it and really really want to reread it. I should probably read the sequel to this too ahah. Honestly, I enjoyed all of Roshani Chokshi’s books that I’ve read so far, so I definitely recommend her books (I’m currently reading Gilded Wolves as I write this and it’s so good so far!)

The Star-Touched Queen cover

For all those fantasy lovers, The Poppy War is definitely for you. It’s so so good (although very graphic and brutal) and is based on the Opium War (Fun fact: I blanked on the name of this and kept thinking of opal ahahah). I listened to this on audiobook, which made reading it so much easier, since the book is pretty dense. The sequel is releasing this year (I think) and now’s a good time as ever to start it!

And that’s all I have for today. I think there are a couple more books that I think you all should check out, so I think I will do a second part soon.

Let's talk

Have you read any of these? Are they on your TBR? Which one are you most interested in? If your favourite Asian book isn’t on this list, recommend it to me! I’d love to know what your favourites are!
